A federal judge ordered Pfizer Inc. to pay $7 billion to resolve allegations that it illegally marketed and sold Viagra, the drug that treats erectile dysfunction.
The complaint alleges that Pfizer illegally marketed and sold Viagra to men who were using the drug, including Viagra users who have experienced symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, and who were using Viagra in combination with other drugs such as sildenafil or tadalafil.
The complaint also alleges that Pfizer illegally marketed the drug to male users who were suffering from erectile dysfunction by promoting the drug, which was sold under the brand name Cialis, in order to improve sexual performance and improve the effectiveness of the drug, and in order to promote the use of Viagra in men who were experiencing erectile dysfunction.
The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that it had received complaints of sexual adverse events or the use of Viagra in men who had suffered from erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer’s U. S. headquarters are in Philadelphia, Pa. The company’s headquarters in Indianapolis is in Bedminster, N. J., and its headquarters in Chicago are in Chicago.

Schofield said that the agreement will help Pfizer obtain an order for the case and ensure that the case is processed as quickly as possible. He said Pfizer has already agreed to resolve the matter.
The case is pending in the U. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. The complaint was filed on June 18, 2011.
